Guildford Lions Donate Vital Funds to Tackle Blood Cancers and Blood Disorders
Guildford Lions Club members recently received special thanks from world-renowned haematology professors as they donated £2,000 towards our Going for Gold campaign which will benefit patients with blood cancers and blood disorders.
Members of the voluntary service organisation agreed to support LIBRA in aid of the haematology department at King’s College Hospital in London (King’s).
The funds will bolster our current ‘Going for Gold’ appeal which has a target of £300,000 and these vital funds will ensure new life saving and life improvements can be creates at King’s.
To mark their donation, members of Guildford Lions presented the substantial funds to Professor Ghulam Mufti, Head of Haematology at King’s, Farzin Farzaneh, Professor of Molecular Medicine, along with LIBRA Chairman Andrew Lodge. They met at a Lions Convention on 22 February and discussed how the funds will be put too good use.
Professor Ghulam Mufti praised Guildford Lions and said: “We are most grateful to all the members of the Club for choosing to support LIBRA.
“The donation will make a real difference to the exciting Going for Gold Campaign. Funds will help to cover the cost of much needed equipment for a planned new King’s Health Partners Haematology Institute, which will be located at King’s. The equipment will be used to develop lifesaving and life improving therapies for blood cancer patients and those with blood disorders in the UK and overseas.”
The planned King’s Health Partners Haematology Institute will enable professors to have a dedicated space for the ongoing development of more advanced therapies that will challenge the cells in the immune system and recognise the leukaemic cells and ultimately destroy them.
Guildford Lion President Mick Ryan commented: “We decided to support LIBRA as it is such an inspirational charity, run by Lions members in the South East of England. Many of our Club members know someone who has been affected by a type of blood cancer or blood disorder in some way and by making a donation we hope to make a positive difference to patients in the future.
“We have strong connections with the LIBRA Trustees and really admire the work that they do for King’s. We heard the Professors speak at the Lions convention and the therapies they are developing are truly phenomenal. We encourage others to support LIBRA as it is such a wonderful local charity that has a much wider impact.”
