World Sickle Cell Day 2025: Tell it Loud – Share, Celebrate, Advocate

LIBRA

Thursday 19th June 2025 marks World Sickle Cell Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness of sickle cell disorder (SCD), which is a serious, inherited blood condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Tell it Loud,” is a powerful call to action: a reminder to amplify the voices of individuals and families affected by SCD, celebrate their resilience, and advocate for better care, access, and understanding.

What is Sickle Cell Disorder?

Sickle cell disorder is a genetic blood condition that causes red blood cells to become rigid and shaped like a crescent or “sickle.” These misshapen cells can block blood flow, leading to episodes of severe pain, organ damage, and other serious complications. In the UK alone, thousands of people live with this lifelong condition, many of whom face challenges in accessing timely diagnosis, effective treatment, and consistent care.

Despite advances in medical science, including gene-editing breakthroughs supported by researchers at King’s College London, there is still a long way to go, especially when it comes to ensuring affordable, accessible treatments for all.

LIBRA’s Role in the Fight Against SCD

At LIBRA Lions, we’re proud to support cutting-edge research and clinical care through our partnership with the Haematology Department at King’s College Hospital. Our funding helps drive innovation, including exciting new work around F cells, which are a type of red blood cell that can naturally reduce the effects of sickle cell disease.

With the help of donors and Lions Clubs across the UK, LIBRA is actively funding research to better understand how these F cells are formed and how they might be stimulated in patients, potentially leading to more accessible, life-changing treatments for people around the world.
